Ica Camera Serial Numbers
The Praktica FX was finally introduced in 1952 with flash contacts for bulbs (F) and electronic flash (X). This Praktica FX was in fact identical to one of the earlier Praktica versions with F and X contacts. The main change was just the name of the camera. The Praktica FX was like the previous Prakticas: it was a 35mm SLR camera with a waist-level finder, M42 lens mount, non-instant-return mirror, a removable back and a cloth focal plane shutter. Unlike Ihagee's, Praktica cameras didn't have interchangeable finders, but accessory pentaprism finders were available. The Praktica FX was made in different versions between 1952 and 1955 just differing in the flash contacts. According to, there were with interchangeable finders and a self-timer, but they weren't mass produced.Even though East German quality and engineering standards weren't said to be as good as in West Germany, says that “the standard of engineering and reliability of KW 35mm SLRs rose steadily through the early fifties” (p.67). Praktica cameras were widely exported everywhere and became a cheaper alternative to other SLRs, even during the sixties dominance of the Japanese manufacturers. The Praktica FX was replaced by the.

As explains, “The Praktica FX2 had a redesigned viewfinder optical system, to accomodate what we would now regard as a conventional prism sitting low above the focusing screen” (p.67). Besides, it featured the M42 standard internal diaphragm stop-down mechanism, but still lacked instant-return mirror.ViewfinderThe Praktica FX's finder is a reflex waist-level finder that shows an horizontally reversed image. As the mirror doesn't return automatically, film must be wound first in order to place the mirror in the viewing position. The focusing screen is a flat ground glass screen on one side and a condenser screen on the other side, providing a very bright image. There is a folding loupe that magnifies the whole screen to aid critical focusing.
Despite not having microprisms nor split image rangefinder, focusing is very easy and effective using just the magnifier. I think that the screen produces remarkably beautiful images. Sometimes watching the screen is more pleasant than the real world, the colors are somehow more vivid. The finder cover can be used as well as a frame finder or sports finder, but it doesn't allow focusing.Carl Zeiss Jena manufactured an that allowed eye-level viewing and focusing. Unfortunately, the pentaprism finder produces a smaller and dimmer image and the magnifier can't be used, so it's harder to focus, but as an accessory I think it is a valuable collectable.ShutterThe Praktica FX has a cloth horizontal focal plane shutter. Shutter speeds are divided into fast speeds (1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/200 and 1/500) and slow speeds (1/2, 1/5 and 1/10). Slow or fast speeds are activated by a smaller knob avobe the shutter speed dial.
As explains, this knob “aligned an arrow with a black triangle for the fast-speed range and with a red triangle for the slow speeds” (p.67). The slow speed mode activates a clockwork mechanism that retains the shutter's second curtain according to the exposure time selected.Once you have selected the slow or fast speeds mode, you have to pull and turn the outer ring to your desired shutter speed. 1/25 and 1/2 speeds share the same position, firing at 1/25 if the fast mode is activated or at 1/2 if the slow is.The shutter release button is placed on the front of the camera, which, according to, “is supposed to reduce camera shake” (p.45).Some of the pictures I made with this camera had. Later I realised that the cloth shutter had lots of. According to, this is a common malfunction: “These cameras usually work well, although the shutter blinds need close inspection before you buy, as they are often pinholed or stiffened with age” (p.68).
LensHaving an M42 mount, the Praktica FX could be fitted with different lenses. It was sold usually with (Tessar, Biotar) or (Primoplan, Primotar) lenses. My camera has a coated Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 2.8/50 T.The Tessar is probably the most classical and copied formula ever. According to, “The triplet was the father of the Tessar, which Zeiss first made in 1902. Basically it consists of a triplet with the rear glass split into a cemented doublet, allowing the designer the extra freedom necessary to provide very good sharpness. The basic Tessar type was essentially a lens for the non-reflex. Throughout the 1950s the Tessar was normally retained only as a low-cost option for SLRs” (p.118).The Praktica FX doesn't have any internal diaphragm stop-down mechanism.
Therefore, when you stop the lens down, the viewfinder turns darker. Full aperture is always recommendable and useful when focusing and composing, but what if a smaller aperture is required? This Tessar has a pre-set diaphragm mechanism very useful to stop down immediatly before taking the picture. As explains, “The pre-set diaphragm effectively splits the diaphragm control into two parts: the setting ring, and the stopping-down ring. The first is set before focusing and composing, and a quick twist of the second stops the lens down to the pre-set value before making the exposure” (p.67).For example, if you want to make a picture at f/5.6, first you have to draw the pre-setting ring back and turn it until the red dot is opposite 5.6. Then you can open the diaphragm at full aperture (f/2.8) to view and focus. Before firing the shutter, you'll have to twist the aperture ring as far as it will go and press the shutter release button. Having already pre-set the diaphragm, it would have stopped down to the selected aperture (f/5.6).Flash contactsIf this camera is named FX that's because it has F and X flash contacts.
The F contact adds a 10 miliseconds delay for flash bulbs synchro, while the X contact is intended for electronic flash units without any delay. Some other Praktica FX cameras have different contacts types, they are described bellow in the section.VersionsThere are two Praktica FX classifications: Michael Sorm's and Mike Otto's. They are slightly different, even though their main reference is the same book, by Richard Hummel.I've preferred to make a very basic classification, more based in one, but without rare versions or export versions. For reference purposes, I've also included the first Praktica versions, but not the Praktiflex.According to Richard Hummel, around 95,000 units of the Praktica FX series were made.I've not included Hummel's version 127 in my classification because neither have found any sample, even though Hummel says that 25,000 units were made. Therefore, those 95,000 total units may have been actually much less.Serial number is engraved behind the lens mount, below the mirror.
A few products, most notably the low volume top end pro cameras, use only the Japan-based serial numbers. Thus, you can have a D3 with a 20xxxxx serial number no matter where in the world you bought it (curiously, the D5 reverts back to the regional numbering system).
My own serial number, 121,662, matches perfectly the Praktica FX type 129, so I assume that my camera was made in or near 1954. Praktica and Prakticamat guide. Focal Press, 1968. ISBN.Available atHICKS, Roger. A History of the 35mm Still Camera. Focal Press, London & Boston, 1984.
